Fine Dining in San Ramon: What the City's Best Tables Look Like Now

Fine dining in San Ramon used to be a short list. The Brass Door, a hotel restaurant or two, and the option of driving 30 minutes into Walnut Creek if you wanted anything more ambitious. That picture changed when City Center Bishop Ranch opened on Bollinger Canyon Road in 2018. Architect Renzo Piano's open-air mall pulled serious culinary names into the East Bay suburbs, and the Tri-Valley got a fine dining scene that competes with anything in San Francisco proper. Eight years in, here's what the city's best tables actually look like.

How San Ramon Fine Dining Changed in the Last Five Years

The shift wasn't gradual. Bishop Ranch landed three serious operators inside a 24-month window. The Slanted Door moved James Beard winner Charles Phan's California-Vietnamese cooking into a permanent suburban location. Alora Social brought a credible modern Mediterranean concept. KHAKI Indian Bar and Canteen opened with a Michelin-decorated chef team in residency. Each was a full-strength operator choosing the East Bay on purpose, not a downgraded suburban version.

The question now isn't whether San Ramon has fine dining. It's which kitchen, for which occasion, with which dining room.

What Counts as Fine Dining in San Ramon in 2026

The category itself has shifted. Tablecloths and French sauces are out. Open kitchens, prix fixe and tasting menus, and chef-led concepts are in. Rooms are dressed up but not stiff. Wine lists are curated rather than encyclopedic.

By that working definition, the genuine fine dining options inside San Ramon in 2026 are KHAKI, The Slanted Door, LB Steak at Bishop Ranch, Alora Social, and The Brass Door. Just outside city limits, Esin Restaurant & Bar and Forbes Mill Steakhouse in Danville pull San Ramon diners regularly, as do Pippal in Dublin and Rosmarino. Compared to five years ago, that's a different city.

The Bishop Ranch Fine Dining Cluster

City Center Bishop Ranch concentrates most of San Ramon's serious dining into one walkable Contra Costa County block. That density is unusual for the East Bay. You can park once and move between cocktails, dinner, and dessert across the courtyard.

KHAKI Indian Bar and Canteen sits at the top of the cluster on credentials. Chef Sujan Sarkar earned a Michelin star at Indienne in Chicago and is a James Beard nominee. He also runs Tiya in San Francisco's Cow Hollow, a vegetarian-forward modern Indian restaurant featured in the Michelin Guide. Chef Pujan Sarkar adds his own Michelin background. Forbes called the cooking a culinary love letter to post-independence India. The format is prix fixe, the cocktails run on Indian whiskies and house-made shrubs, and the regional cuisine traces to Kerala, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Delhi, and Bihar. Our fine dining Indian restaurant in San Ramon post has the deeper Indian-specific case.

The Slanted Door brought Charles Phan's California-Vietnamese cooking to City Center. Same operation he built in San Francisco, with sustainable local sourcing and a strong cocktail bar. Strong choice for date nights and out-of-town guests who recognize the name.

LB Steak is the Bishop Ranch steakhouse option for clients who specifically want USDA prime and a competent wine list.

Alora Social runs modern Mediterranean with a real bar program. Works for casual fine dining and groups who want something less formal than a tasting-menu commitment.

For the broader cluster including casual options, our guide to restaurants at Bishop Ranch covers the full lineup.

San Ramon Fine Dining vs Danville and Walnut Creek

Walnut Creek still has more fine dining inventory by sheer volume. Danville has Esin Restaurant & Bar and Forbes Mill Steakhouse, both well-regarded. What San Ramon offers that neither matches: Michelin-decorated leadership in residency at a single restaurant. KHAKI is the only Tri-Valley restaurant with a chef who carried a Michelin star into a current operation. That's the credential that pulls diners from Dublin, Pleasanton, Danville, and Walnut Creek into San Ramon for an anniversary or a serious dinner. The full case is in our upscale Indian dining in the Tri-Valley post.

Why KHAKI Sets the Bar for Fine Dining in San Ramon

Credentials are documented. Chef Sujan Sarkar's Michelin star at Indienne in Chicago is on record. James Beard nomination is documented. Tiya in Cow Hollow earned its own Michelin Guide mention for vegetarian-forward modern Indian cooking. Chef Pujan Sarkar adds a separate Michelin background.

Press is recent and editorial. Forbes (a culinary love letter to post-independence India). The Infatuation (named in the February 2026 San Ramon dining guide, with the matcha mule called out specifically). Eater SF (a new destination for Indian cuisine in the East Bay). East Bay Times (fine dining from a Michelin star chef). 277 Google reviews at 4.4 stars across two years of operation.

The format is prix fixe with rotating seasonal courses. The current menu covers Kerala fish dishes, Lucknow biryanis, Hyderabad slow braises, Delhi street-style kababs, and Bihari champaran preparations. The bar program runs separately and has its own following, covered in our happy hour and cocktail bar post. How to Choose a Fine Dining Restaurant in San Ramon for Your Occasion

Three filters do the work. Who's at the table, what's the dinner trying to accomplish, and how much should the room itself contribute. KHAKI for milestones, anniversaries, and dinners that need to actually impress. LB Steak for steakhouse-loving clients. The Slanted Door for California-Vietnamese with a recognizable chef name. Alora Social for modern Mediterranean and a livelier crowd. The Brass Door for old-school San Ramon nostalgia.

For guests coming from Dublin, Pleasanton, Danville, or Walnut Creek, the 8-to-15-minute drive into Bishop Ranch beats the 35-to-50-minute drive into San Francisco for the same caliber of meal.

How to Reserve, Host a Private Event, or Book Catering at KHAKI

For dinner, reserve a table on OpenTable. Friday and Saturday dinners book two to three weeks out during peak seasons. For client dinners, milestone celebrations, rehearsal dinners, holiday parties, or full restaurant buyouts, the private events team handles direct booking. Configurations run from semi-private (14 to 30 guests) through reserved sections (40 to 75) to full buyouts up to 100. For corporate lunches or off-premise event meals, the catering team takes requests through manager@wearekhaki.com or (925) 359-6794.
